Hiza Mbela Mvuendy: Exploring Human Behavior Through Data

Categories: General News

Hiza Mbela Mvuendy, a recent Spring 2025 graduate, came to UNC Charlotte from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, drawn by the university’s strong academic programs, welcoming community, and vibrant urban setting. As a student in Data Science with a minor in Sociology, he found the perfect intersection of his analytical mindset and his interest in human behavior.

“I’ve always been curious about patterns in how people think and act,” Hiza said. “Data science gave me the tools to explore those patterns in meaningful, impactful ways.”

Combining technical expertise with social insight, he discovered how the two fields—data science and sociology—could work together to analyze and address complex societal issues. That interdisciplinary approach shaped much of his academic experience.

When reflecting on his time at UNC Charlotte, Hiza describes it as empowering, transformative, and impactful. He credits much of his growth to faculty support, especially from Dr. Stephanie Bradley, whom he names as his most influential professor. Her mentorship, he says, helped him develop not just academically, but personally and professionally.

Now preparing to enter the workforce, Hiza is interviewing with several companies for full-time roles in data science. He’s excited about what the future holds.

“I’m looking forward to opportunities for growth and development—and I’m confident I can adapt to any new challenge that comes my way.”

Among the most valuable lessons he’s learned? The importance of community.

“I didn’t realize how much I would come to value my personal and professional connections,” he reflected.

Outside the classroom, Hiza brings a global perspective. He speaks both English and French and has traveled to seven countries, including the U.S., Canada, The Bahamas, France, Belgium, England, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

When offering advice to future Niners, Hiza encourages students to stay true to themselves and be bold:

“Be yourself, prioritize yourself, believe in yourself, and make sure to leverage all the opportunities that come to you. Don’t limit yourself! Don’t let fear stop you, because that can hold you back.”
