Biography:

Stephanie Pilkington is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering Technology and Construction Management at UNC Charlotte. Her research focuses on natural hazards, hazard impact and recovery modeling, community resilience and sustainability, human-infrastructure interaction, and AI applications in infrastructure. In 2019, an article of hers was featured on CNN titled “Even ‘weak’ hurricanes can cause a lot of harm”. This was in reference to Hurricane Barry in Louisiana. Stephanie, along with other researchers, developed a Hurricane Impact Level (HIL) ranking system to categorize storms, from zero to five, by ranges of anticipated economic damage – accounting for where a storm is to make landfall, its forecasted wind speed, storm surge, and rainfall total through the use of artificial intelligence.
