Biography: Dr. Ted Carmichael has over 14 years of experience as a Data Scientist and researcher in both the public and private sectors. He began his academic career at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he held various roles, including Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Affiliated Assistant Research Professor, and Adjunct Faculty. Dr. Carmichael earned a Master of Science (MS) degree in 2006 and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science in 2010. After a brief period as a Senior Application Specialist at Dickson Advanced Analytics, Dr. Carmichael moved to TutorGen, a Carnegie Mellon start-up in Fort Thomas, KY, specializing in Intelligent Tutoring Systems and Educational Data Mining. At TutorGen, he served as Principal Investigator (PI), Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI), and Senior Personnel on multiple grants from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, the Department of Defense, and the State of Kentucky, among others. In January 2024, Dr. Carmichael returned to Charlotte to join the School of Data Science. He has previously developed and taught courses in Computer Simulation and Modeling, Agent-Based Modeling, eScience, Cognitive Science, and Data Analytics. His dissertation, which focused on using Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation for social science research, won the Distinguished Dissertation Award at UNC Charlotte in 2010.
