At the Intersection of Impact and Innovation: Soumil Kothari’s Journey
Soumil Kothari is a proud May 2026 graduate, having earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Data Science with a concentration in AI, Robotics, and Gaming.
Experience at UNC Charlotte
Soumil’s journey has been marked by transformation, challenges, and rewards. Having moved from his hometown of Basel, Switzerland, he found that UNC Charlotte truly stood out during his search for where to learn for the next four years.
“I chose UNC Charlotte because of its strong Computer Science program, which initially drew me in as someone interested in technology and innovation. Once I started exploring different academic opportunities. I discovered how unique the Data Science major was here. I realized it aligned perfectly with my growing interest in artificial intelligence, emerging technology trends, and the use of data to solve meaningful real-world problems. That combination led me to pursue a double major in Computer Science and Data Science.”
With this self-discovery and interest, deciding to major in Data Science was not difficult but rather presented Soumil with a well-rounded educational experience.
“I was originally focused entirely on Computer Science, but as I progressed through my coursework, I noticed how much overlap there was with Data Science and became interested in the analytical side of technology. Coming in with an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in Business Management, I already had an appreciation for decision-making, strategy, and understanding patterns in systems. Data Science felt like the perfect intersection of business, technology, and problem-solving. I also learned that UNC Charlotte offers one of the few undergraduate Data Science programs in both the UNC and the North Carolina state systems, which made the opportunity even more appealing.”
Educational experiences can round out a student’s experience, including the impact their professor(s) can have on them. Soumil decided to highlight two professors who stood out along the journey.
“My favorite professors have been Nadia Najjar and Marco Scipioni because they made complex topics feel approachable while also challenging me to think more critically. Their teaching style pushed me to become more confident in my technical abilities, and they genuinely cared about student growth both inside and outside the classroom.”
Soumil enthusiastically shared the personal growth he noticed within himself as a 49er, how he will continue to grow, and what excites him about the future.
“Before coming to UNC Charlotte, I knew I was interested in technology, but I didn’t fully realize how adaptable and ambitious I could be. My time here taught me that I enjoy taking on challenges outside my comfort zone, whether through internships, leadership opportunities, or balancing multiple disciplines. What excites me most about [the future] is the opportunity to work at the intersection of technology and impact. AI and data are shaping nearly every industry, and I’m excited to contribute to building solutions that improve efficiency, solve problems, and create meaningful change.”
Soumil is currently a part of the full-time Data & AI Technology Early Talent program with Ally Financial. In the future, Soumil plans to pursue a master’s degree in a technology-focused field, whether in Data Science, AI, or a related discipline, ideally back home in Switzerland.
Final Piece of Advice
Soumil wanted to share a last piece of advice to incoming students that helped him throughout his time as a 49er.
“Say yes to opportunities before you feel ready. Some of the most valuable experiences I had at UNC Charlotte came from stepping outside my comfort zone, whether through internships, networking, leadership roles, or exploring a second major. Growth usually happens when things feel unfamiliar.”
