Announcing the Summer 2020 Seed Grants for Data Science Recipients

UNC Charlotte’s School of Data Science (SDS) is excited to announce its third round of Seed Grants for Data science. The grants were established to help nurture early-stage research in the field and to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations. As the University continues to advance as a leader in data science, research will be a core capability in the School of Data Science.

Five teams composed of UNC Charlotte researchers, spanning four different colleges received a total of $60,000 in funding towards their research projects. The School of Data Science also awarded an additional $40,000 to three teams from the spring 2020 funding cycle.

This cycle’s selected projects aim to address issues in depression monitoring and intervention, early detection for lung cancer, online radicalization via social media, ethical leadership, and identification of individuals at risk for the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Each team is encouraged to apply for longer-term funding on a national scale.

“I believe it’s more important than ever to support the University’s researcher mission given the state of our new, temporary reality,” said Doug Hague, executive director of the School of Data Science. “I’m excited to see what these teams accomplish with their projects, as they work to solve some of the world’s largest problems.”
