Biography: Dr. Abbey Thomas (Abbey Fenwick) is an Assistant Professor in Kinesiology at UNC Charlotte, specializing in the prevention and treatment of post-traumatic osteoarthritis following knee injuries. She teaches in the undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program and mentors graduate students in Applied Physiology and Neuromechanics. Dr. Thomas is actively involved in the Athletic Trainers’ Osteoarthritis Consortium, where she serves on the executive committee, focusing on improving outcomes for physically active populations. Her academic journey includes a Post-doctoral Fellowship at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, contributing to advancements in the Physical Therapy Program. Dr. Thomas earned her Ph.D. in Kinesiology from the University of Michigan, an Ed.M. from the University of Virginia, and an M.S. from Pennsylvania State University, specializing in Athletic Training and Kinesiology.  Dr. Thomas’ research is centered on understanding the long-term consequences of knee injuries, particularly post-traumatic osteoarthritis and the neuromuscular effects of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Her work has been recognized with awards such as the Student’s Choice Teaching Award from the University of Michigan’s School of Kinesiology and has been published in leading journals including the Journal of Athletic Training and the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation. Through her interdisciplinary approach and dedication to education and research, Dr. Thomas continues to contribute significantly to the field of sports medicine, addressing critical issues in knee injury prevention, rehabilitation, and long-term joint health.
