Biography:

Dr. Zbigniew Ras is a professor of computer science at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. He also holds a professorship position in the Institute of Computer Science at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Warsaw, Poland. His Ph.D. degree is from the University of Warsaw and his DSc Degree (Habilitation) is from the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 2012, he was awarded the National Professorship title by the President of Poland. Dr. Ras’ areas of specialization include Data Mining, AI, Recommender Systems, Health Informatics, Business Analytics, Music Information Retrieval, and Art. He is the Founding Editor and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems (since 1992) and a member of the Editorial Board of several journals, including JETAI, BDCC, FI, and the Advances in Clinical and Experimental Medicine. He is the author/editor of 64 books mainly in the AI area and the author of more than 350 book chapters, journal, and conference papers. He has received many awards including the Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award, COIT Graduate Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Alcoa Foundation Outstanding Faculty Award. He was the finalist of the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Ras received competitive grants and contracts from NSF, DOD/ARO, ONR, SAS, The Daniel Group, ORNL, DOE, IBM, State Committee for Scientific Research (in Poland), and AMVIS (in Czech Republic). He graduated 24 PhD students, including 5 in Poland.
